African Blackwood
Botanical Name: Dalbergia melanoxylon
African blackwood is a true dalbergia and a member of the rosewood family. It's tonal qualities rival that of Brazilian Rosewood and is considered by some luthiers to be even better. It is difficult to work and can be hard to bend so sanding the sides down to .080 or lower will help. It is strikingly beautiful and polishes to a high luster. It is very fine grained, and is quite stable when dry and glues satisfactorily. African Blackwood tonewood has excellent response, and the taptone is fantastic.
